Leon Lycurcus Sampson

Leon Lycurcus Sampson CAMBRIDGE - Leon Lycurcus Sampson was born on Aug. 12, 1941, to the late Charles Burkett and Doris Sampson Meade of Cambridge. He peacefully departed from this life to be with the Lord on Saturday, Sept. 6, 2008. In 1958 he graduated from Mace's Lane High School in Cambridge. In 1961 he moved to Miami, Fla., with his family and attended Florida A & L Technical College. He was employed with Black & Decker Inc. for 26 years. During his service with Black & Decker he severed on many committees, and wore many hats. While at Black & Decker, Leon worked with the Community Events Committee, Employee Appreciation Committee, Company Picnic Committee, Golf Tournament, Black and Decker Bowling League and the Relay for Life. Leon had advanced in the company to a Senior Line Mechanic up until 2003 when the company moved from Easton to Reynosa, Mexico where he served as a mechanical consultant and trainer. After a short retirement in 2003 he began employment at Goodwill Industries as a Floor Supervisor. He remained employed at Goodwill Industries until the time of his death only taking two days off from work during his five years of employment. Leon was very well known in the community serving on various community boards. He was a member of the Talbot County Partnership, East End Association, United Fund, Mid-Shore Community Mediation Center, First Night Talbot, Easton Celebration, Waterfowl Festival, Talbot County Council, Talbot County Democratic Central Committee, Elected Official for the Maryland State Central Committee, Talbot County Housing Authority, and the United States Bowling Congress. He was married to Sylvia Mae Thompson Sampson for 32 years. He is survived by his wife; and ten children, Janelle Dawkins (Jibreel) of Baltimore, Jackie Sampson of Cambridge, Lee Sampson (Ibadella) of Denver, Colo., Deloris Sampson Scott, Ellen Sampson, Greg Sampson of Savannah, Ga., Cedric Sampson (Gwen) of Yemassee, S.C., Patricia Smith, Easton, Timothy Thompson (Geraldine) of Federalsburg, and Trina Pitts (John), Dover, Del.; five siblings, Gary Burkett (Kelli) of Bowie, Elva Stanley of Upper Marlboro, Gail Burkett (Jean) of Houston, Texas, Tonya Cornish (Edward) of Hurlock, and Denise Cray of Newark, Del.; one sister-in-law, Jane Baylor of Newark; special aunt, Clara Sampson; special cousin, Jean Cornish of Cambridge; 32 grandchildren; 13 great-grandchildren; a host of aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews, cousins and a multitude of loving friends. Funeral services will be 1 p.m. Saturday in Bethel AME Church, 625 Pine St., Cambridge, with a viewing two hours prior to the services. Interment will be in Bethel Cemetery.
