Leedell McElvey, 59 HURLOCK - Leedell McElvey was called home to be with the Lord on Saturday, April 10, 2010, at Dorchester General Hospital in Cambridge, at the age of 59. Leedell (Leaky) McElvey entered this world on Nov. 8, 1950, to the late Wilmer (Preacher) McElvey and Leona Barkley McElvey of Salisbury, Md. He attended Salisbury Elementary and Salisbury High School until integration, and graduated from Wicomico High school in 1969. It was during his senior year of high school that his Distributive Education class connected him with a good job at the Acme Market Grocery store where he worked until he retired. Leedell and his son Andre married Kay Bailey and her daughter, Dawn, on Aug. 12, 1979, to form a new family. After four years this family added a son, Jamal McElvey. Leedell was a member of Hurlock United Methodist Church where he was quite active. In the church he served as an usher, trustee, Sunday school teacher, and Vice President and President of the Hurlock United Methodist men and the Charge Treasurer. In the community he served as a Boy Scout Leader and T-Ball Coach. He was an Honorary Member of NDAAIGA Inc. and a mentor for several years at Hurlock Elementary School. Leedell was known as Pop-Pop by everyone at the Harriet Tubman team of Excellence Center where he cooked, cleaned, mentored, and tutored the early elementary students. The children at the center loved their "Pop Pop" and he showed his love daily by helping them perfect a learning skill, by joking and playing and sometimes giving an extra treat at snack-time. Leedell is survived by his wife of 30 years, Dr. Kay McElvey; three children, Dawn Bailey Chandler (Ellis)of Hurlock, Andre' McElvey (Genille) Georgia, and Jamal McElvey of Hurlock; three grandchildren, Jaden and Justin McElvey, and Sincere Chandler; two half sisters, Beatrice Holden, and Natalie Dozier; one half brother, Richard Simms; an adopted son, Tevin Kyer; an adopted grand-daughter, A'Mya Caldwell; three brothers-in-law, Wordell Johnson (Emma) of Hurlock, Md., Carroll Johnson (Doreen) of Vienna, Md., and Michael Johnson ( Judy) of Severn, Md.; and a special aunt, Frances Barkley of Philadelphia, Pa. The viewing services was held at Hurlock United Methodist Church on Friday, April 16, 2010. The funeral was held at the same location on Saturday April 17, 2010.
