The large crowd on hand were treated to some great racing on Saturday night as the 2014 season at the Delaware International Speedway wrapped up with the $60,000 Delaware State Dirt Track Championships.

Rick Laubach of Quakertown, Pa., drove from his 11th starting spot to win the 50-lap Big Block Modified finale.

The biggest upset of the two day championships was pulled off by Milton, Delaware’s Rob Schirmer taking the lead coming off the final turn in the 50-lap Super Late Model feature to win the biggest race of his career.

Jamie Mills had high hopes of a second Fall Championship win when he started on the pole for the 50 lapper but it was not to be as he pulled into the infield while leading off the fourth turn on the first circuit and was done for the day.

Ryan Godown in the Bill Hewlitt No. 901 got by Jordan Watson on the initial start and took the lead with Brad Trice moving into third.

Rick Laubach had jumped up on the outside at the start and was on the move from his 11th starting spot. By lap three he was up to fifth and in four more circuits had dropped Trice from third while H.J. Bunting and Craig VonDohren battled for fifth.

Four cautions in the first 20 laps kept the field tightly bunched but then the field settled down to some solid racing. Laubach got by Watson and began to pressure Godown just prior to halfway. On lap 23 Lauback shot under Godown and took the lead.

At the halfway sign the top five were Laubach, Godown, Watson, Bunting and VonDohren.

Bunting was working traffic well and got by Watson for third but that would turn into a three way battle for second between Godown, Bunting and Watson. Watson retook third on lap 34. Laubach’s lead was erased when Godown got into Dave Dissinger in traffic with Dissinger spinning in the third turn. Watson had just gotten by Godown but the yellow put him back into third.

Rob Schirmer would start eighth behind a group of heavy hitters but drove the race of his career in the 50-lap championship. In qualifying on Friday night Andrew Mullins and Nick Davis captured the heat and would start in the top two spots. Mullins took off at the drop of the green with Davis on his rear bumper. By lap seven the leaders were in traffic with Mullins nearly tangling down the front straight and Austin Hubbard getting mired in the traffic while running in fourth.

Mike Stratton ended his up and down season on a high note in the 20-lap Mod Lite Championship. Stratton and Tim White started one-two by virtue of their heat wins on Friday night. White’s night would be short lived as the engine let go bringing out the yellow on lap two. On the restart Nick Sapp picked up the chase.
