Students in Wicomico County schools will have classes until June 17, to make up snow days missed this year, and until June 22 if the state doesn’t waive three of the days.
This year, students missed nine days due to poor weather conditions. Five of them will be made up on June 11, 12, 15, 16 and 17. A sixth day was added by changing a professional day to a regular school day on April 7.
At its March board meeting, the county’s board of education members approved calendar revisions and agreed to apply to state education officials for a waiver of three days.
The response will be announced once it’s received, according to Tracy Sahler, who handles public relations for the school board.
Bennett Middle School students will finish the school year Friday, June 5, to allow time to relocate teachers, staff and equipment to the new Bennett Middle.
Also at their meeting, board of education members gave initial approval to the calendar for the 2015-2016 school year. It will begin Aug. 31 and end June 9, 2016. However, if pending state to require a post-Labor Day start passes, school will begin Sept. 8.
“This calendar was the clear favorite among people who gave input on three different draft calendars. About 190 people favored the Aug. 31 start, while 46 preferred starting on Sept. 8 after Labor Day, and 32 wanted the school year to begin on Aug. 24,” Sahler said.
The calendar will be on the board’s April 14 agenda for a second reading and final vote.
