The Wicomico County Council on Tuesday reshuffled its leadership, naming Larry Dodd as Council President and making John Cannon the Vice President.

Dodd, a Republican who represents District 3, was chosen by acclamation by the seven members.

Cannon, a Republican elected at-large by voters, had served as Council President for the last five years.

Dodd was re-elected to a second consecutive term in November. His district covers the southeast quadrant of the county including areas toward Parsonsburg, Powellville, Mount Hermon Road, Rustic Acres, Fruitland and Fox Chase.

Dodd, a council member earlier in the decade, was defeated for re-election 13 years ago. He was later appointed to a seat on the Wicomico Board of Education, before making a council comeback five years ago.

A retired fire captain, he worked for the Salisbury Fire Department 25 years, starting his career as a paramedic.

Cannon is also in his second stint on the council. The owner of a housing rentals business, Cannon has recently hinted that business demands have compromised the time he needs to lead the council.

He has been the group’s spokesman in repeated conflicts with County Executive Bob Culver, mostly concerning competing interpretations of the County Charter.

During the last election season, Dodd referred to tensions between Culver and the council as ordinary business dealings. “With seven members vs. one member, you kind of pull at each other,” Dodd said then. “We work things out.”
