Kim Hudson: Keeping your kids occupied in summer's doldrums

We are only in the second week of summer and already some kids (and parents) are searching for things to do.

How do you occupy the idle hours of summer without breaking the bank?

There are many options to choose from but one of my favorites is spending time in our public library.  We are so fortunate that our library sits in the heart of downtown.  (Just in case you aren’t aware, there are also branches at the Centre of Salisbury and in Pittsville.)

Personally, I love the Downtown Library. Parking in the adjacent lot is free for the first two hours so you can spend a little time without spending a dime.  Or, with all the options downtown, you can make a whole day of it.

There’s a lot going on this summer and you won’t want to miss it.

We all know how important reading is for developing minds but it can be a challenge to keep children reading when school is out.  Experts agree that children who read during the summer gain reading skills.

Maybe more importantly, experts also agree that children who do not read in the summer lose skills -- what is commonly referred to as the “summer slide.”

That should be motivation enough to get to the library and check out some books.  But the library is giving us even more reason to stop by with their Summer Reading program. Kids who sign up will get a game board and can do reading activities for prizes.  There is a game board for infants to age 5, ages 6-11 and one for teens.  Plus the library has a ton of programs and performers scheduled this summer.

Check out the calendar and more on their website www.wicomicolibrary.org.  The best part is everything is free.

Now if you have more than a few hours and a few dollars to spend you can divide your day between the library and exploring downtown.

Anyone who happened to be at last week’s 3rd Friday event couldn’t miss the number of people downtown and the awesome energy it created.

The best way to keep that positive energy flowing is by visiting downtown.  So check out some books and then grab pizza or ice cream at Maya Bellas.  Or stop by Main Roots for a coffee and treat your kiddos to their iced hot chocolate – they will forever thank you for it.

Right around the corner is Cake Art where you can get a cupcake or two.  Plus there are more restaurants to choose from and shops to explore.

If you have little ones just let them walk along the plaza.  They will love exploring the paths and looking in the windows.  Put some bubbles in your bag and find a shady spot to rest while the kids enjoy themselves.

Speaking of bubbles … this Friday, the Bubble Lady will be at the Downtown Library from 10:30-11:15.  She will make small bubbles, smoke filled bubbles for you to hold and even bubbles large enough for you to fit into.

All ages are welcome.  Don’t miss out on the fun.  And don’t forget to explore downtown while you’re there.
