Josie Mae Major

Major, 75 CAMBRIDGE - Josie Mae (Taylor) Major departed this life on Thurs., May 16, 2013 at Dorchester General Hospital. Born, Sept. 19, 1937 in Belle Haven, Va., she was the daughter of the late Alice Louise Ayers. She was educated in the school system of Accomack County, Va. She was employed at Coldwater Seafood in Cambridge for over 30 years where she retired in 2000. During her employment at Coldwater, she served as a Shop Stewardess in the Union. After she retired, she worked for Kool Ice in Seafood and other jobs. She was an active lifetime member of St. Luke UM Church where she served as President of the Usher Board over 20 years, member of the New Covenant Singers and served on the Kitchen Committee. She also was a longtime member of the Household of Ruth. Josie was loved and well known throughout the Eastern Shore within the Ushers Organization. She is survived by her husband, Edward Major of Cambridge; five daughters, Alice Taylor of Cambridge, Faith Taylor of Clements, Md., Deborah (Christopher) Wilson of Front Royal, Va., Mazie Williams of Charlotte, N.C., and Mona (Thorrind) Woolford of Hurlock; two sons, Grayson and Efrain Taylor both of Cambridge; two step-daughters, Mitoya (Michael) Murray of Cambridge, and Theresa Major of Florida; two step-sons, Ozell Major of Texas and Darnell Thompson of Cambridge; two sisters-in-law, Darlene Brown of Cambridge and Aretta Pinkens of Philadelphia, Pa.; three brothers-in-law, Reginald (Alfreda) and Sylvester Major, all of Cambridge and Wilmore Frank Holden of Delaware; 18 grandchildren; and 19 great-grandchildren; and of host other relatives, close friends, Ruby Woolford, Alice Hopkins and Cleo Bowe all of Cambridge, Md.; and other friends. She was preceded in death by a son, Walter Taylor III; and granddaughter, Rayanna Smith. Funeral services will be held at 1 p.m. on Saturday, May 25, 2013 at St. Luke UM Church, 712 Bradley Ave., Cambridge with a viewing Friday evening 6 to 8 p.m. and one hour prior to services at the church.
