Joseph Lewis Selig, 90 TAMARAC, Fla. - Joseph Lewis Selig, who served in the U.S. Armed Forces in the Battle of the Bulge in Belgium and participated in the liberation of the Mauthausen and Gusen concentration camps in Austria, and received the Bronze Star, passed away peacefully Tuesday August 12, 2008. He was 90. Born Oct. 30, 1917, in Brooklyn, N.Y., to Benjamin and Bertha Selig, his grandfather, Herman Selig, was a German immigrant who entered America through Castle Garden as a young man in 1869. Herman married Amelia Kattlef Forkish in 1870 and had four children, Benjamin, Hyman, Sam, and Rachel. Raised in N.Y., Joseph graduated from Franklin K. Lane High School in 1935. On Dec. 7, 1941, he married Janet Stern at the Bradford Hotel at 210 West 70th Street in Manhattan. They resided at 1701 Norman Street in Ridgewood, Queens, with Janet's mother, Helen, and her younger sister, Muriel. Joe was a member of the 11th Armored Division from Oct. 30, 1942 until Oct. 19, 1945, when he was honorably discharged with the rank of sergeant. Following the war, Joe and Janet moved to Levittown, N.Y., and then in 1955, the family moved to Md., and lived in Salisbury, Cambridge and Ocean City. Joe and Janet raised three sons, Barry, William, and David. Working in the garment industry, Joe owned and managed several factories that manufactured children's and ladies clothing. In 1989, they moved to Fla. A life-long member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars, after retirement, Joe served as community president of Lime Bay Condos in Tamarac, Fla., and was active in its maintenance and development. He is survived by his loving wife of 67 years, Janet; their three sons and their wives, Judy, Donna, and Linda; five grandchildren, Evan and his wife Carrie, Bradley, Hannah and her fiancé Ben Scazzero, Jordan and Justin; sister-in-law, Muriel Ritter; nephew, Martin Epstein and his wife Bobbi; and Brian Ritter and his wife, Barbara; and niece Joan and her husband Mark Osnowitz. Joe's older sister, Edith Epstein, passed away in 1997.
