His wife, Catherine "Marie" Wheatley, preceded him in death in 2008. He was a retired printer, and a US Army veteran. He was a member of the Crisfield VFW Post #8274 and the Stanley Cochrane American Legion Post #16. He is survived by his children, John Wheatley, Jr., Garland Lockhart and her husband Steve, Torie Webb and her husband Danny, and Michael Wheatley and his wife Billie; grandchildren, Aaron Wheatley and his fiancé Amber, DJ Webb, Courtney Cole, Jared and Adam Lockhart, Michelle Harris and her husband Mike, Justin Dorrier, and MacKenzie Wheatley; and a great-grandchild, Cayden Webb. Along with his parents and his wife, he was preceded in death by two daughters, Joanne and Mary Wheatley. There will be a private ceremony at Arlington National Cemetery at a later date. Donations in his memory may be made to Coastal Hospice, P.O. Box 1733, Salisbury, MD 21802-1733. The family would like to express their sincere appreciation to his nurse, Susan, for all her care and compassion, and to Pastor Joe Barnes for always being there when the family has needed him.
