John B. Moore Jr.

ANNAPOLIS - John B. Moore Jr., 94, a resident of Annapolis, died Jan. 1, 2010. Well known for support of arts and cultural organizations, he worked for the State of Maryland as the Director of the Division of Historical and Cultural Programs. He was instrumental in the formation of the Mitchell Gallery at St. Johns College and was first to serve as Chairman of the Advisory Board. He was later recognized as an Honorary Alumnus of St. Johns College. As a longtime board member of the Annapolis Symphony Orchestra and the Maryland Hall for the Creative Arts, he served in various officer and committee roles. He was born in Albermarle County, Va., and graduated from the Newport News Apprentice School of Shipbuilding. His career began with shipbuilding, but from there he became involved with the development and production of fiberglass products, economic development, and towards the end of his career his work with historical and cultural programs. He was preceded in death by his wife of 63 years, Hilda; and daughter, Beverly Anne Moore. He is survived by two children, John Garland Moore and wife Julia, and Catherine L. Moore Stephens and husband Carl; grandson, Dr. John Garland Moore Jr. and wife Jennifer; and two great-granddaughters, Jessica Lynn Moore and Jacqueline Marie Moore. A memorial service will be 1 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 5, in the Mitchell Gallery, Mellon Building, at St. John's College in Annapolis. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that contributions be made to the John and Hilda Moore Memorial Fund in support of the Mitchell Gallery.
