CAMBRIDGE - James L. Smith, 73, passed away at his home on Sunday, May 25, 2008.

He was born in Cambridge on April 7, 1935 and was a son of the late Daniel Harford and Jane Kirby Smith.

Jimmy attended school in Cambridge and graduated from Cambridge High School in 1953. He served in the US Army from January 1958 to December 1959.

On Nov. 8, 1969 he was married to the former Carolyn Shenton. He worked at Western Publishing for 35 years. He was a member of Dorchester Post 91 American Legion, Choptank Memorial Post 7460 VFW & and Cambridge Lodge No. 1211 Loyal Order of Moose.

He enjoyed painting and art, dancing and skating.

Survivors include his wife, Carolyn H. Smith of Cambridge; one brother, William S. Smith of Cambridge and several nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by a sister, Frances J. Thomas and two brothers, D. Harford Smith Jr. and Kirby Smith.

A funeral service will be held at 1 p.m. on Thursday at the Thomas Funeral Home in Cambridge with the Rev. Jerry Wade and the Rev. A. Delmer Willey Jr. officiating. Burial will follow at the Maryland Veterans Cemetery. The family will receive friends during the hour preceding the service.
