TANGIER - Mr. James Gorden Daley, 89, husband of the late Nettie Jean Daley and a lifelong resident of Tangier, Va., passed away on Sunday, Oct. 31, 2010 at Riverside Shore Memorial Hospital in Nassawadox, Va. Born on October 22, 1921, in Tangier, Va., he was a son of the late Gorden Daley and Eudella Crockett Daley. Early on, he was a waterman and barber, and later retired as a Postmaster. Mr. Daley was a member of Swain Memorial United Methodist Church, and served his country in the United States Army during WWII in the Pacific Theatre. He was a charter member of the Tangier Volunteer Fire Department, and a longtime member, organizer and adjutant of the Tangier V.F.W. Post 9358 where he helped organize many events including the annual Memorial Day Celebration on the island. He was also an organizer of the annual Tangier Homecoming Celebration. Survivors include three children, Terry Daley and wife Joanne of Tangier, Gloria Bays and husband Darrell of Onancock, Va., and Mickey Daley and wife Delores of Tangier; three grandchildren, Terry, Jr., Darrell, Jr., and Joseph; five great-grandchildren, Lance, Hallie, Tara, Rylee and Campbell; and a nephew, Billie Lee Daley. Other than his parents, he was predeceased by a brother, William "Bill" Daley; and a sister, Rosalyn Daley "Rose" Parks, who had helped him raise his children after his wife's death in 1963. Funeral services were held at the Swain Memorial United Methodist Church on Wednesday, November 3, 2010 with the Reverend Patricia Stover and Mr. Danny McCready officiating. Interment followed at the Fairview Lawn Cemetery in Onancock, where the Reverend Jon Woodburn officiated. There was a visitation at the church on Tuesday, November 2, 2010, from 7:00 until 9:00 PM.
