James C. Callaway Jr.

DELMAR - James C. Callaway, Jr. died Saturday, Sept. 3, 2016, at Hospice of the Chesapeake in Severna Park, Md. Born in Laurel, he was the eldest son of the late J. Carlton Callaway Sr. and Helen Hastings Callaway. He graduated from Laurel High School and served in the Delaware National Guard/Army Reserves for 27 years. He graduated from Command & General Staff College in 1973 & retired with the rank of Major. He worked at the DuPont Nylon Plant in Seaford, where he retired after 44 years. After DuPont, he worked for over 20 years as a school bus driver. He was a former member of Melson's United Methodist Church and belonged to Living Stones Church in Salisbury. He is survived by his son, Brett Callaway of Salisbury; his daughter, Karen Muessig of Severna Park, Md.; five grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his wife of 58 years, Evelyn Layfield Callaway; sisters, Thelma Hutcheson, Betty Grazela and Doris Fry; and a brother, Robert. A funeral service was held Saturday, Sept. 10, 2016, at Living Stones Church in Salisbury. Interment with military honors followed at Melson's Cemetery in Delmar. Arrangements are in the care of Short Funeral Home in Delmar.
