He was a 1954 graduate of Wicomico High School, where he played trombone in the marching band. Following graduation, he entered the U.S. Army, serving as a Combat Engineer in Germany for 20 months. He returned home to work as a carpenter and at the Watson Shirt Factory, later named Gant Shirt Makers. Later he worked for the city of Salisbury as a Master Carpenter; in his more than 20 years in the Carpentry Shop, he contributed works to area playgrounds, the Salisbury Zoo and the Riverwalk area.
