James A. Shockley

SALISBURY -- James Arley Shockley, died at Peninsula Regional Medical Center on Oct. 26, 2015. Born in Salisbury, he was the son of Stanford Arley Shockley and Alice Duffy Shockley. He graduated from Wicomico High School in 1942 and joined the Army in 1943. He served with the 90th Division in World War II as an infantryman was a point of personal pride for him. On June 6, 1944, he was a part of the 3rd Battalion of the 359th Infantry Regiment of the 90th Division that landed on Utah Beach in the battle of Normandy at noon. During most of 1944, James fought in France and later as his division moved into Germany he was captured on the outskirts of Dillingen, Germany. As a prisoner of war from December 1944 until May 3, 1945, he spent much of his time marching from one prison camp to another during the coldest winter Germany had seen in 40 years. He was a lifetime member of Elks Lodge No. 817, Disabled American Veterans No. 34, AF& AM Lodge No. 221, Veterans of Foreign War No. 194, and a member of AXPOW Maryland Chapter East, where he was a past commander. After the war, he assisted his parents' in their business -- Shockley's Wallpaper and Paint Co. He is survived by his wife of 67 years, Kitty Shockley, daughter Gail Shockley Fowler of Salisbury; daughter Pamela Djakovich of Millsboro; sister, Kathleen Haglier of Fredericksburg, Va.; a niece and two nephews. In addition to his parents he was preceded in death by an infant son, Michael Shockley. A memorial service was held Friday, Oct. 30, 2015, at Holloway Funeral Home in Salisbury. Interment was at Parsons Cemetery in Salisbury.
