CAMBRIDGE - J. Emory Legg, 88, passed away on Sunday, Feb. 4, 2007, at the Dorchester General Hospital in Cambridge.
He was born at Starr on June 30, 1918, and was a son of the late George Washington and Emma Pippin Legg.
Mr. Legg attended the first seven years of school at Starr, and at age 13 moved to Centreville with his family and graduated from Centreville High School in 1935.
He enlisted in the U.S. Army on Nov. 30, 1942. While serving in the Army he had served in Northern France and served under Gen. George S. Patton and had been awarded the American Theater Ribbon, European African Middle Eastern Theater Ribbon as well as the World War II Victory Ribbon. He was honorably discharged on March 30, 1946.
On June 15, 1963, he was married to the former Eulah Lee Layton.
Mr. Legg was a co-owner of Matthews Amusements in Cambridge for a number of years and had retired in 1983.
He had been a member of Zion United Methodist Church in Cambridge since Feb. 11, 1962, and had served on the Administrative Board, the Staff Pastor Parish Relations Committee, Board of Trustees and had also sung in the senior choir for many years and was currently serving on the Finance Committee of Zion Church.
Mr. Legg was also a member of Cambridge Lodge No. 66 A.F.&A.M., Boumi Temple and Scottish Rite Bodies, the Eastern Shore Shrine Club, Chesapeake Forest 115 Tall Cedars, member of Minerva Chapter 50 O.E.S., Tidewater Farm Club, Navy League, Hurlock American Legion Post, Choptank Post 7460 VFW and the Cambridge Yacht Club.
He enjoyed working in the yard and working on his farm in the Vienna area and enjoyed traveling and some years ago enjoyed playing golf.
Mr. Legg had been ill since early January and was taken to Dorchester General Hospital on Sunday evening.
Survivors include his wife, Eulah Lee Legg of Cambridge; one sister, Frances Legg Wilmer of Annapolis; several nieces, nephews and great-nieces and great-nephews and cousins.
Members of Cambridge Lodge No. 66 A.F. & A.M. will conduct a Masonic Memorial Service on at 1 p.m. Thursday at Zion United Methodist Church in Cambridge, which will be followed by a funeral service with the Rev. Kevin E. English officiating. Burial will follow at the East New Market Cemetery.
Memorial contributions may be made to the Endowment Fund of Zion United Methodist Church, 612 Locust St., Cambridge, MD 21613.
The family will receive friends at the Thomas Funeral Home, P.A. in Cambridge on from 7 to 9 p.m. Wednesday.
Pallbearers will be George W. Legg III, Robert Emory Legg, Wilmer B. Edgell, Colin Edgell, Edward Kenny, Dr. Charles T. Shortall, Albanus Phillips III, Dr. John Scanlon, John White and Thomas Ralph.
Honorary bearers will be Paul Brooks, Bob Davis, Allen Eckel, Joseph Feldman, Marvin Foxwell, Claude Gootee, Albert Phillips, Edward "Bud" Pridgen, Dr. Pieter Rieckert, Dr. Russell P. Smith, Herman Stevens, C. Mace Thomas, Ralph Young, Gorton H. McWilliams and Richard Dempster.
