WILKES,-BARRE, Pa. -- Irene L. Spilman, 81, formerly of Taylors Island, died Wednesday, Feb. 28, 2007 in the Inpatient Unit, Hospice Care of the VNA, Heritage House, Wilkes-Barre.

Mrs. Spilman was born in Wilkes-Barre, daughter of the late john and Helen Holodick Saraka, and was a National Honor Society graduate of James M. Coughlin High School, Class of 1943, Wilkes-Barre.

She had been employed in the war industry in Maryland for several years and was later employed by the Social Security Administration, Baltimore.

Prior to her retirement, she had been a dietitian with the Dorchester Hospital in Cambridge. She had resided in Maryland until four years ago when she returned to Wilkes-Barre.

Mrs. Spilman had been a guest at Heritage House for the past two years and was of the Roman Catholic faith.

Surviving are her husband of 60 years, Thomas K. Spilman, a guest at Heritage House; a daughter, Mrs. Romaine (Nancy) Kesecker of Severna Park; a son, Thomas J. Spilman of Trappe; grandchildren, Morgan Kesecker, T. C. and Johnny Spilman; brothers, John and Norman Saraka, both of Wilkes-Barre; sisters, Mildred Silveri of Plains, Evelyn Lisoski of South River, N.J., Winnie Pugh of Wilkes-Barre, Diana Biniek of Mt. Holly Springs, Helen Pugh of Hanover Township and Sharon Ashton of Harding and several nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by an infant brother, Michael Sarak and a brother, Thomas (Timmy) Saraka.

A private service will be held at the convenience of the family from the H. Merritt Hughes Funeral Home, Inc., 451 North Main St., Wilkes-Barre with private burial in the Maryland Veterans" Cemetery. There will be no calling hours.

The family requests that flowers be omitted and that memorial donations be made to a charity of the donor"s choice.
