SECRETARY - Hazel Dukes Wheatley, 93, of Secretary, died Dec. 17, 2010, at Chesapeake Woods Center in Cambridge. Born Feb. 20, 1917, in Friendship, she was the daughter of the late John Wesley Dukes and Edith Frances Morgan Dukes. At an early age, she moved with her family to Philadelphia. After graduating from Collingdale High School in Collingdale, Pa., she and her sister moved to Federalsburg. In 1941, she married John "Dude" G. Wheatley. During WWII, they moved to Baltimore where she worked at Glenn L. Martin Aircraft Company. She later worked in the office at Montgomery Ward in Baltimore. In 1976, they returned to the Eastern Shore. For many years, she bowled with the Cambridge Bowling League. She attended senior clubs in both Secretary and Cambridge and she was a member of Sunnyside Alliance Church in Secretary. She is survived by a son, Douglas Wheatley and his wife Terresa of San Marcos, Texas; a daughter, Janis Werner and her husband Stan of East New Market; eight grandchildren, Sandra Russum and her husband Dennis, Matthew Werner and his wife Amy, Rob Wheatley, Susan Hurt, and Mary, Rachel, James and Shelley Wheatley; eight great-grandchildren, Jennifer Russum, Lindsey Long, Taylor and Madison Werner, Breanna Wheatley, Allison and Bethany Hurt, and Lillianna Wheatley; a great-great-granddaughter, Camryn Russum; a daughter-in-law, Suzanne Wheatley of Cambridge; a sister, Bertha Marie Jerbasi of New Bern, N. C.; and several nieces and nephews. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband who died May 6, 1984; a son, Kenneth Wheatley; and a granddaughter, Diane Marsh; five brothers, Wilson, Orland, Raymond, Charles and George Dukes; three sisters, Della Rosser, Elizabeth Partridge, and Mary Ellen Dukes There will be a memorial service celebrating Mrs. Wheatley's life on Saturday, March 12, 2011, at 11:30 a.m. at Sunnyside Alliance Church in Secretary.
