Salisbury's Tyler Snyder had three goals Sunday during their season opening 16-7 win against Hampton Sydney.

The top ranked Salisbury University men's lacrosse team opened its 2018 season campaign with a convincing 16-7 victory over No. 19 Hampden-Sydney College on Sunday afternoon. The Sea Gulls used a 12-goal second half to capture the season opening victory.  

Eight different Salisbury (1-0) players found the net as Corey Gwin and Tyler Snyder led the way scoring a team-high three goals apiece. Gwin tallied all three of his goals in the second half while Snyder netted two of his three in the first.

The opening 30 minutes was a back and forth battle between the two squads. The Tigers (0-1) scored six seconds in taking the opening face-off down for a goal by face-off specialist Wilson Booth and rallied back from a two-goal deficit to tie the game at 4-4 heading into the break.

However, the Sea Gulls settled in to the final 30 minutes of play tallying six goals in the third quarter while shutting out Hampden-Sydney. Snyder netted his third and final goal of the afternoon on a man-up opportunity, converting Salisbury's first extra man opportunity of the day. Three more members of the maroon and gold would find the net including Garrett Reynolds, who scored twice in the quarter. He would finish the game with two goals and six shots on net.

After Hampden-Sydney cut the deficit to just five to open the final quarter of action Gwin tallied his final two goals of the afternoon less than 30 seconds apart to put the game out of reach. With 10 and a half minutes to play Gwin finished off a nice pass from Zach Pompea, who finished his afternoon with two goals and an assist, to push the lead to 11-5 before netting his final marker of the day just 28 seconds later.

The defensive unit of Kyle Tucker, Cory Berry, and Drew Borkowicz were solid throughout the day. Berry posted a team-high four caused turnovers while both he and Tucker scooped up 14 total groundballs to lead the team.

Anthony Stavrakis was solid in the cage making four saves on the day to earn the win.

Salisbury returns to action on Saturday, when it hosts No. 12 Lynchburg College. Face-off between the Sea Gulls and Hornets is set for 1 p.m.
