To say that Green Hill Country Club has undergone a transformation is an understatement. The 87-year-old country club has been successfully bringing back membership and the public to the beautiful golf course and clubhouse nestled on the banks of the Wicomico River.
Last year, a group of dedicated members raised the necessary capital to clear the club of debt by buying the bank mortgage. They also made some management changes and have successfully turned around an operation that was once teetering on the edge. A rebranding campaign dropped the word “Yacht” from the Club’s name, and helped spread the word that the club is now open to the public and a recreational resource for all to enjoy.
By putting some of that capital into substantial improvements at Green Hill, including a little attention to the golf course, a newly resurfaced tennis court and improvements to the swimming pool, membership has been on the rebound.
“We are starting to see a lot of our members who had left over the years making their way back to Green Hill,” said Buz Carragher, who was appointed one of two Managing Partners by the newly-formed LLC. “Our golf course has never been better. Our new Superintendent is doing an outstanding job and we are excited to be hosting 27 tournaments this year, more than double what we did last year.”
Golf isn’t the only reason members are coming back. A newly resurfaced tennis court is helping too. With the hiring of Assistant Salisbury University Tennis Coach Curtis Quandt, the Club is hoping to attract a larger tennis crowd looking for a new home.
And the pool which opened Memorial Day weekend will see the resurgence of the Green Hill Gators Swim Team which has been dormant for the last several years. Under the direction of new pool manager Amanda DiMuzio, swimming lessons will also be offered to members and nonmembers.
But the biggest change has been in the restaurant. Now open to the public, Chef Ken Keim has been offering outstanding food specials every weekend including Two for One Burgers all day on Sunday in the bar and half-price Prime Rib on Saturday nights. With the addition of Live Music every Friday night, the Club has been packing in the crowds every week.
“Providing quality food with exceptional service has always been our goal at Green Hill and we are proud to report that we are accomplishing both,” said Tom Fisher, the Club’s other Managing Partner. “Our members have come to expect that from us and we have been working hard to get that part of our operation in shape. We invite everyone to come out and give our restaurant a try. Reservations are a good idea though because we do tend to get busy on some nights and don’t want to turn anyone away.”
The banquet business is bustling at Green Hill with more than 20 weddings booked in 2014 compared with only a handful in 2013. Brides are already booking for the 2015 season as well.
And Green Hill has partnered with Camp Odyssey this year to offer a campers a fun-filled day including golf, tennis and swimming along with all the other unique experiences that Camp Odyssey provides including art and nature activities.
Green Hill has a long tradition on the Eastern Shore for being a destination for fun and recreation for the whole family. And with the renewed sense of energy and enthusiasm that can be felt throughout the Clubhouse, it appears it is here to stay for the next generation.
