Get those Girl Scout cookies ordered now

Girl Scouts aren’t just going door to door to sell irresistible cookies this year. They’re also offering them online, and learning about digital marketing.

Every year, more than 9,000 Scouts on Delmarva participate in the cookie program, selling more than 1 million boxes.

Among them is 13-year-old Gracie Smullen of Parsonsburg, who used a photo of herself on horseback to personalize her on-line cookie page.

Her mother, Jennifer Smullen, said Gracie has been a scout since she was 4, and selling cookies since she was 5.

“She liked setting up the page for digital sales. We haven’t had any orders on the page. Most of 2010-02-24-2009_04_02Samoaour families are all local, so she’s been selling them person to person, but she might get some orders before it’s over,” she said about her daughter, whose Girl Scout cookie of choice is Tagalongs.

“I think it’s good,” she said about digital sales.

“It gets the word out farther than just locally where we are. A lot of girls have families all across the United States and even farther. For those families, it would be beneficial.  Any new opportunity is great,” she said.

Gracie’s favorite Tagalongs are among eight kinds of cookies available. From popular Thin Mints to new Toffee-tastic, they went on sale Jan. 10, with most of the 112 Girl Scout councils nationwide now using digital sales.

“Digital Cookie follows Girl Scouts’ classic hands-on approach to teaching girls new skills,” stated a news release from the Girl Scout Council.

Traditionally, selling cookies has taught goal setting, decision making, money management, people skills and business ethics. Digital Cookie adds knowledge about online marketing, application use and e-commerce.

Scouts maintain personalized websites to market cookies, accept orders with credit cards and activate shipments.

Girls learn digital money management using dashboards to track sales and goals.

But Digital Cookie isn’t replacing the traditional program or cookie booth sales, which begin Friday at local businesses.

Also, for the 12th year, girls will send donated cookies to Operation Taste of Home for the military.

The kinds of cookies for sale include two new kinds. They are Rah-Rah Raisin, with whole grain oats, raisins and Greek yogurt chunks, and Toffee-tastic, gluten-free with toffee bits and a rich, buttery taste. Toffee-tastic will be available in limited amounts.

The cost is $4 per box and $5 for Toffee-tastic.

Also available are the favorites, Thin Mints, Samoas, Tagalongs, Do-si-dos, Trefoils and Savannah Smiles.

Cookies can also be purchased by calling 1-800-YUM-YUM2. Proceeds remain in the area and are used to fund scouting programs.
