Gertrude Ruark Brittingham

Gertrude Ruark Brittingham, 82

HOOPERSVILLE - Gertrude Ruark Brittingham, 82, passed away at the home of her grandson in Dover, Del. on Wednesday, June 11, 2008.

She was born at Hoopersville on April 26, 1926 and was a daughter of the late Horace and Sue Ruark Ruark.

She attended school at Hoopers Island. For many years she had worked in the seafood industry at Rippons Brothers Seafood and Ruark & Ashton Seafood. Mrs. Brittingham had continued working until she was 80.

On July 11, 1944 she was married to Samuel James Brittingham. He passed away on Dec. 24, 1990.

She had enjoyed playing Bingo and playing cards. Mrs. Brittingham had been in failing health for the past year.

Survivors include one daughter, Linda Stevens and her husband, Billy Stevens of Cambridge; 11 grandchildren, Ralph Stevens, Lawrence Stevens, Chuckie Stevens, David Stevens and his wife, Tracy Stevens, Terry Sherman and her husband, Todd Sherman Sr., Jeannie Moxie and her husband, Owen Moxie, Donna Rae Blann and her husband, Brian Blann, Theresa Smith and her husband, Wayne Smith, Jessie Brittingham, Lonnie Brittingham and Nikki Johnson; 10 great-grandchildren, and three sisters, Nancy Robbins of Robbins, Betty Lou Middleton of North Carolina, Karen Ruark of Hoopersville and one brother, Donald Ruark of Dailsville and several nieces and nephews.

In addition to her husband, she was preceded in death by two daughters, Cara Mae Hart and June Johnson and two sons, Lawrence S. Brittingham and Jerry Brittingham.

A funeral service will be held at 1 p.m. on Monday at the Thomas Funeral Home in Cambridge with Pastor Terri Moore officiating. Burial will follow at Dorchester Memorial Park.

The family will receive friends on Sunday from 7 to 9 p.m.

Memorial contributions may be made in Mrs. Brittingham's name to the Capitol Baptist Church, 401 Kesselring Ave., Dover, DE 19904.

Pallbearers will be David Stevens, Ralph Stevens, Chuckie Stevens and Lawrence Stevens.
