George Samuel "Sammy" Edwards, 73, also of Delmar, Md., passed away Monday, Dec. 18, 2006, at the Malcolm Randall VA Medical Center in Gainesville, Fla. surrounded by his family and caregiver, Andrita Stephens.
He was born June 20, 1933 in Cambridge, son of the late George Marshall and Celia M. Woodland Edwards.
Mr. Edwards graduated from Cambridge High School in 1951. In 1952 he married Elizabeth (Betty) Lou Groff of Cambridge. He served in the U.S. Navy with his military career taking him to Saudi Arabia, Italy, Korea and Japan. He retired and was honorably discharged in 1977.
Mr. Edwards was a member of the American Legion, Jacksonville Post 137; American Legion, Dorchester Post 91 in Cambridge; Cambridge VFW Post 7460; BPOE Key West Lodge 551 and Jacksonville Yacht Club.
Mr. Edwards enjoyed traveling, mechanical and engineering projects, telling Navy stories, taking photographs, playing guitar and watching old movies.
He is survived by his sister, Dorothy Lee Daniels of Fredericksburg; his son and daughter-in-law, George Steven and Patricia Edwards of Mardela Springs; his daughter, Beverly Jean Jenkins of South Carolina; grandson, Justin Edwards of Edgewater and granddaughters, Stephanie Edwards of College Park and Lana Cook and great-grandson, Camden Cook of Columbia, S.C. He is also survived by a nephews, Andrew Daniels of Crofton, Va. and Lee Ann Jackson of Gaithersburg.
Mr. Jackson will be laid to rest with full military honors at 1 p.m. Friday at the Maryland Veterans' Cemetery at Beulah where a Christian burial service will be officiated by the Rev. Norman Hancock.
In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to the American Legion, Dorchester Post 91.
Arrangements are in care of Messick Funeral Home on Nanticoke Road in Bivalve.
