George H. Gillis, 62

SALISBURY - George H. Gillis, 62 of Salisbury, died Easter Sunday, March 23, 2008 at Peninsula Regional Medical Center following a sudden illness.

Born in Cambridge, he was the son of the late Dr. and Mrs. Marion H. Gillis Jr.

George graduated from Cambridge High School. Although he grew up in Cambridge, he spent most of his adult life as a resident of Salisbury.

At age 5, George suffered life altering injuries in an automobile accident. In spite of this severe setback, George always kept a positive outlook on life. He always loved doing for others and spent many years as a volunteer at local nursing homes and Peninsula Regional Medical Center. He was always concerned about those whom he considered to be less fortunate than himself. George was a friend to all.

He was an avid sports fan and particularly loved the Baltimore Ravens and the Baltimore Orioles. He prided himself on his extensive knowledge of sports statistics and facts. George was also an encyclopedia of jokes, especially the corny ones.

He is survived by three sisters: Betty Hidalgo and her husband, Jerry of Toledo, Ohio, Ann Tyndall and her husband, Glenn of Salisbury and Joan Robbins of Salisbury; five nephews: Russell Tomes and Scott Tomes, both of Chicago, Ill., Jackson Tyndall, Matthew Robbins and Christopher Robbins, all of Salisbury; a niece, Meg Tyndall of Salisbury; and numerous cousins.

In addition to his parents he was preceded in death by a sister, Marguerite Gillis.

A celebration of his life will be held at 11 a.m. Wednesday, at the First Baptist Church of Fruitland. Visitation will be this evening from 7 to 9 at Holloway Funeral Home and Wednesday one half hour prior to the service at the church. The Rev. Walter "Dow" Wood will officiate. Burial will be in Wicomico Memorial Park in Salisbury.

Contributions may be made in his memory to the First Baptist Church of Fruitland, 630 Clyde Ave., Fruitland, MD 21826 or the charity of your choice.
