CRISFIELD - George Elton "Junie" Massey Jr., 87, of Crisfield, passed away Sunday, April 12, 2009, at McCready Memorial Hospital in Crisfield after a short stay. He was a native of Crisfield, born Aug. 13, 1921, to the late Eva Byrd Massey and George Elton Massey. Valedictorian of Crisfield High School Class of 1937, he served in the U.S. Navy on a minesweeper off the West Coast during World War II. He returned home in 1946 with his wife, Margaret Daugherty Massey, and worked for the former W.W. Woolworth Co. and then for his father-in-law, O.L. Daugherty before working for the United States Postal Service as a rural mail carrier. He retired in 1980 after 30 years of service. Mr. Massey was a 60-year member of the Chesapeake Lodge 147 AF&AM Masonic Lodge in Crisfield where he was Worshipful Master in 1957. He was a 60-year member of the Stanley Cochrane Post 16 American Legion, a lifetime member of the Immanuel United Methodist Church in Crisfield, member of the Crisfield Chapter of AARP, and a longtime member of the Crisfield Country Club. He enjoyed golf and bowling. He is survived by his wife of 68 years, Margaret Massey; a daughter, Christine Allender and husband Dan of Bellvue, Colo.; a son, Michael S. Massey and wife Beth of Andover, Mass.; grandchildren, Craig Massey and Laura Massey of Andover; and a niece, Diane Brunk and husband Peter of Portsmouth, Va. Along with his parents, he was preceded in death by a sister, Joyce Gerald. Funeral services officiated by the Rev. Bob Daniels will be 11 a.m. Thursday, April 16, held at Bradshaw & Sons Funeral Home in Crisfield. A Masonic Memorial Service will take place during the viewing at 7 p.m. Interment will be in Sunnyridge Memorial Park in Crisfield. A special thanks goes out to all the family and friends who have shown such caring and concern. Brother-in-law Wayne Daugherty and Margaret's cousin Margaret Strain have given countless hours of time and caring helping both George and his children through this difficult time. In lieu of flowers, those who wish to do so may make a memorial contribution in his name to the Alice Byrd Tawes Nursing Home Activities Fund, 201 Hall Highway, Crisfield, Maryland 21817, or to a charity of your choice.
