EDEN - Frances Beatrice Barkley "Sis" Burke died Tuesday, Jan. 26, 2021. Growing up in Eden, her parents were the late Bernie Barkley and Annie Pearline Barkley.
She attended a one-room school house in Allen. She was a member of First Baptist Church in Salisbury. She worked beside her husband at the Shiloh United Methodist Church in Pocomoke City, St. Paul United Methodist Church in Stockton and Calvary United Methodist Church in Ironshire. She worked at Campbell Soup, Green Giant and Fruitland Intermediate School in Fruitland. Later, she joined her husband as an independent bus contractor and driver for the Wicomico County Public School System.
She is survived by her children, Bertha Burke, Clarence Russell Burke Jr., Barbara Johnson, Myra Slaughter and Lamont Burke; 13 grandchildren; 26 great-grandchildren; and two sisters, Alvita Davis and Lily Mae Johnson. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband of 43 years, the Rev. Clarence Russell Burke; a daughter, Valerie Patterson; seven brothers, Robert Polk, Roscoe Barkley, Lawrence Dorman, LaCurtis Barkley, Theodore Barkley, Marion Barkley and Charles Barkley; and a sister, Cleo Edwards.
A funeral service will be held at 1 p.m., Saturday, Feb. 6, 2021, at First Baptist Church Family Life & Cultural Center in Salisbury. Friends may call from noon to 1 p.m. Interment will follow at Springhill Memory Gardens in Hebron.
Arrangements are in the care of Lewis N. Watson Funeral Home in Salisbury.
