She was the daughter of Mary V. Hayes and the late Willie J. Hayes, born June 27, 1947, in Dorchester County where she also received her early education. She was a graduate of Mace"s Lane High School, Class of 1965.
A year later, on July 23, 1966, she was joined in holy matrimony to Ernest Payne. From this union, they were blessed with two children; Yolanda "Shell" and Ernest "Jr."
Mrs. Payne was employed by Airpax Electronics for over 30 years, where she was a group leader and received numerous awards for perfect attendance.
She enjoyed her daily walk, whether it was through the neighborhood or around Airpax parking lot with the lunch club. Tine, as she was called, loved to shop.
Her early Christian foundation was built in Reid"s Grove. She continued building her faith, after transferring to St. Luke UM Church in Cambridge.
A friendship was formed between Catherine Ennels, Monzella Woolford and Mrs. Payne while traveling to "Women In White" and singing on the choir. She also joined the Usher Board
Driving became a challenge as her health began to fail. Her husband and friend, Crystal Camper, would chauffeur her around.
Besides her mother and husband of 40 years, Mrs. Payne is survived by a daughter, Yolanda P. Parker of Glen Burnie; a son, Ernest Payne III of Cambridge; two granddaughters, Imani Payne of Cambridge and Joi Parker of Glen Burnie; a grandson, Angel Payne of El Paso, Texas; a sister, Nona Tillery (Keith) of Reid"s Grove; five brothers, Willis W. Hayes (Denice) of Rhodesdale, Timothy O. Hayes of Reid"s Grove, Jerry T. Hayes (Wanda) of Cambridge, Everick J. Hayes (Karen) of Odenton, and Craig Hayes (Theresa) of Salisbury; a godson, Tyron Waples of Hurlock; an aunt, Helen Washington (Thomas) of Reid"s Grove, and an uncle, Ollie Coleman (Pearl) of Hurlock. She was also survived by a number of great-aunts, great-uncles, nieces, nephews and cousins.
In addition to her father and grandparents, Mrs. Payne was preceded in death by a brother, Oliver O. Coleman and a sister, Brenda J. Coleman.
Services were held on Tuesday, at St. Luke United Methodist Church. Burial followed in Reid"s Grove Cemetery.
A viewing was held on Monday at Zoar United Methodist Church, Reid"s Grove.
Arrangements were handled by the Henry Funeral Home, PA.
