Etha B. Smullen

MARDELA SPRINGS -- Etha B. Smullen, of Mardela Springs, died Wednesday, April 6, 2016, at the home of her daughter in Salisbury. Born in Laurel, she was a daughter of the late Ernest West and Jerdie Mae West Brown. She attended school in Sharptown and worked in a canning factory. Years later, she was employed at Perdue Farms in Salisbury and retired from Mountaire Farms in Milford. She was a member of Zion United Methodist Church in Sharptown, where she served as an usher and sang on the choir with the Zion Traveleers. She is survived by three daughters, Vinal D. Smullen of Philadelphia, Beverly A. Archer of Woodbridge, Va., and Rose M. Smith Pierce of Salisbury; two sons, Alfonso W. Smullen of Bordentown, N.J., and Anthony L. Smullen of Hampton, Va.; 19 grandchildren; 26 great-grandchildren; four great-great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her daughter, Virginia "Jenny" Brown; three brothers, Julius Brown, Preston Brown and Raymond Brown; her stepfather, Verlon Brown; and the father of her children, Harry E. Smullen. A funeral service was held Saturday, April 16, 2016, at Zion United Methodist Church in Sharptown. Interment followed at the church cemetery. Arrangements are in the care of the Lewis N. Watson Funeral Home in Salisbury.
