The owner of Enza’s on the Downtown Plaza cares so deeply about the environment that she gives discounts to customers who ride bicycles there instead of driving.

It’s part of a city initiative and she takes part  because of her belief in using and selling organic and earth-friendly, or green, products, recycling and cleaning without chemicals.

Zina Gallo opened Enza’s, An Organic Salon at 235 West Main St., eight years ago because she couldn’t find a salon that is eco-friendly, with a holistic approach.

Shelves in the four-chair establishment are filled with items that don’t contain pesticides or chemicals and that are not tested on animals. Among them are nail polish; shampoos, cosmetics, John Master’s shampoo for dogs and  natural stone jewelry.

Enza’s sells Eminence organic skin care products. The company, based in Canada, plants a tree for each sale.

“Enza’s is a hair salon but it’s also a store and  gift shop. We sell  pottery by local artists and loofahs. We promote arts and music. The arts are really important to us. We are big on promoting local art,” she said.

On 3rdFriday, she hires musicians to play outside the shop.

The salon is largely known as the place women can have their hair colored or highlighted with products made from organic ingredients, without ammonia.

“That is 80 percent of our business,” Gallo said. Facials can be scheduled. There is body and facial waxing and two specialists apply makeup and design hair for formal events.

The salon is open Tuesdays from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m., Wednesdays from  11 a.m. to 5 p.m., Thursdays from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. and Saturdays from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m.

Gallo has occasionally hosted a public evening of meditation at Enza's, and plans to schedule them monthly. She also hopes to hire a massage therapist.

“A lot of people get headaches in salons because they can’t tolerate the smells. We were the first green salon on the Shore and it just boomed. It has kept us busy. It’s been a nice steady pace even when the economy wasn’t good,” Gallo said.

“We are a clean-air salon. We have a  Zen, relaxing environment. It’s nice.”
