Several candidates in Tuesday’s final day of balloting had a free ride to office.

In Wicomico County, District 1 County Council candidate Ernie Davis had no Republican opponent and will occupy the seat that represents the majority-minority district on the council.

In District 4, which covers the heart of Salisbury, incumbent Republican John Hall had no Democratic opposition, ensuring him a second consecutive term on the council.

In District 5, Republican Joe Holloway was ensured a third consecutive term when Democrat Ron Pagano withdrew from the race last summer.

In state legislative races, District 1 Councilwoman Sharee Sample-Hughes faced no opponent in her bid to succeed retiring delegate Rudolph C. Cane in the House of Delegates’ District 37A seat.

Sample-Hughes will represent a majority-minority legislative district that extends from Wicomico County into Dorchester and Caroline counties.

Sheriff Mike Lewis had no Democratic opposition for a third term as the county’s top law enforcer.

State’s Attorney Matt Maciarello, a Republican completing his first term as the county’s top prosecutor, also faced no Democratic opposition.

Register of Wills Karen Lemon, a Democrat, had no opposition for a sixth term in the county post. Clerk of the Circuit Court Mark Bowen, a Democrat who has held the position since 1987, also had no Republican opposition.
