GREENWOOD, Del. - Eleanor May (Bennett) Hallowell passed away quietly on Sunday afternoon, Oct. 23, 2011, at the Country Rest Home near Greenwood. She had been a resident there receiving excellent care since March 2008. She was 84. Eleanor was born in Lucaston, N.J., on Sept. 18, 1927, to Thomas F. and Bennetta E. (Ramsey) Bennett. Her family moved to Federalsburg, Md., in 1942, where she graduated from Federalsburg High School in 1945. She worked at Cantner's drug store for a few years until she married John "Jackie" H. Hallowell, Sr. on Oct. 11, 1947, in Denton, Md. Eleanor served as a volunteer with the Lady's Auxiliary at Dorchester General Hospital in Cambridge, Md., and Memorial Hospital in Easton, Md. She was a member of the Ladies Auxiliaries of the Federalsburg VFW Post #5246 and the Hurlock American Legion Post #243; she was also a member of Easton Elks Lodge BPOE #1622. After selling the family business, J.W. Hallowell & Sons in Federalsburg, she and her husband raised poultry for Bay Shore Foods and later worked for Charles Powell Realty. She was also very active in the affairs of her children at Federalsburg and Hurlock Elementary Schools and North Dorchester High School. She is survived by daughters, Tracey Sellers, and her husband George of Greenwood, Marjorie Reed and her husband Mike of Hurlock, Md.; and sons, John H Hallowell Jr. and his wife Carolyn (Greenhawk) of East New Market, Md., and Thomas R. Hallowell and his wife Patricia (Anderson) of Hurlock, Md/; along with ten grandchildren, seven great-grandchildren and several nieces and nephews. She is also survived by sisters, Joyce Baril and her husband Robert of Fort Walton Beach, Fla., and Marietta Balta and her husband Michael of Tucson, Ariz.; and a brother, Charles "Dickie" Bennett of Tucson, Ariz. She was preceded in death by her husband, John H. Hallowell Sr.; and by her parents, and a brother and his wife, Thomas F. and Mary Ruth (Wheatley) Bennett. Family and friends were received from 6 to 8 p.m., Thursday, Oct. 27, at the Unity Washington United-Methodist Church in Hurlock, Md. The funeral will be conducted at the same location at 11 a.m., Friday, Oct. 28, with a time of visitation one hour prior to the service. The Reverend Glen Lyburn will officiate and interment will follow at the Eastern Shore Veteran's Cemetery at Beulah, Md. The Zeller Funeral Home in East New Market is handling the arrangements. Her grandchildren will serve as pallbearers: Kevin W. Smith, Kristy S. Myers; Timothy D. Saylor; Ryan E. Koski, Lucas M. Reed; John H. Hallowell, III, Stephanie M. Hallowell, Matthew E. Hallowell; Thomas R. "TJ" Hallowell, Jr., Logan K. Hallowell. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests memorial donations be made to your local Hospice organization; or to the Unity-Washington United Methodist Church, at PO Box 298, Hurlock, Maryland 21643; or to the Hurlock Volunteer Fire Company, at PO Box 178, Hurlock, Maryland 21643; or to Country Rest Home at 12046 Sunset Lane, Greenwood DE 19950.
