CAMBRIDGE - Elbert Eugene Jones Jr., 91 of Hawkeye, passed away on Tuesday, June 26, 2007, at Mallard Bay Nursing Home.
He was born Nov. 19, 1915, son of the late Elbert E. Jones Sr. and Stella N. Conaway Jones.
"Gene," as he was fondly known, attended school in Dorchester County. As a young man he worked for a brief time at Phillips Packing Company and various other jobs before retiring from Sandy Hill School.
He loved to sing and was a member of a quartet, The Gospel Kings. He also sang with the Workshop Choir and other choirs.
Sitting and talking with friends and playing pinochle was his favorite past time.
He is survived by a sister, Eva Stewart of Linkwood; nine children, Asmar Ashanti (Mary) of Salisbury, Elaine Jones, Dianna Sampson, Rose Banks (Leroy), Brenda Jones and Cleo Young (Everett), all of Cambridge and Don Pattrick of Florida, Cecil Pattrick of Baltimore and Robert Beasley (Maria) of Canton, Ohio; 15 grandchildren and a number of great-grandchildren, niece, nephews and cousins.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by two sisters, Eveline Jones and Ethel Jones; two brothers, Thomas and Milton Jones and a special niece, Madeline Jones.
Going home services will be held at 11 a.m. on Saturday, at Bethel AME Church with a viewing two hours prior to the services. Burial will follow in Mt. Pleasant Cemetery at Salem.
Arrangements are being handled by Henry Funeral Home, PA, in Cambridge.
