Edith Marie Asplen

Edith Marie Asplen, 92

CAMBRIDGE - Edith Marie Asplen, 92, passed away at the Chesapeake Woods Center in Cambridge on Monday, March 24, 2008.

She was born at Hoopers Island on Oct. 20, 1915, and was a daughter of the late Arthur and Ethel May Creighton.

She attended schools at Hoopers Island. On Dec. 28, 1940 she was married to Ralph F. Asplen. Mr. Asplen passed away on July 8, 1994.

Mrs. Asplen had worked in the seafood business and later worked at Leggett in Cambridge as a sales clerk, and then worked at the Eastern Shore Hospital Center for 10 years until she retired.

She was a Communicant of St. Mary Refuge of Sinner's Catholic Church in Cambridge, and was a member of Dorchester Post 91 Auxiliary, MCEA and was a member of the Democratic Club.

Mrs. Asplen had been an avid gardener for many years and loved flowers. She had been in failing health for the past 18 months and had been a resident at the Chesapeake Woods Center in Cambridge for the past three weeks.

Survivors include a daughter, Brenda A. North of Cambridge; one son, Michael R. Asplen and his wife, Ava B. Asplen of Cambridge; six grandchildren, Tim North, Debbie Murphy, Terri Greene, Pam Elliott, Ren Marie Asplen and Michael R. Asplen; four great-grandchildren and two great-great-grandchildren. She is also survived by a brother, Eugene Creighton and his wife, Adeline Creighton of Cambridge; a sister-in-law, Dorothy Eckendrode and several nieces and nephews.

In addition to her husband, she was preceded in death by two sisters, Laurena C. Collemer and Lola C. Lucas.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at St. Mary Refuge of Sinners Catholic Church at 11 a.m. on Thursday with the Rev. William Lawler officiating. The family will receive friends during the hour preceding the service. Burial will take place at Dorchester Memorial Park.
