HURLOCK - David A. Gates, 68, of Hurlock passed away on Sunday, Aug. 26, 2007, at Chesapeake General Hospital in Chesapeake, Va.

He was born on Dec. 23, 1938, in Rising Sun, and was a son of the late John and Inez Holbrook Gates.

Mr. Gates attended Hurlock High School. In 1959, he served in the Army National Guard and then became active in the U.S. Army until he received his honorable discharge in 1964.

On Feb. 5, 1963, he married Carolyn Hope Todd who passed away on July 19, 2007. For the last 27 years he worked at Solo Cup Company in Federalsburg. Some of his hobbies were lifting weights and fishing. He was a member of the National Rifle Association and the First Baptist Church in Hurlock.

He is survived by a daughter, Tamara D. "Tammy" Gallagher and husband, Patrick, of Chesapeake, Va.; a son, Richard Gates and wife, Stephanie, of Dover, Del.; two grandsons, Andy Gallagher and Lee Gates; two granddaughters, Tiffany Hoffman and husband, Danny, and Claire Gates; a great-grandson, Jacob; two sisters, Joyce Watson of Hurlock and Robin Ann Chrisman of Pennsylvania; and a brother, John Gates Jr. of Seaford, Del.; and several nieces.

A funeral service will be held at 1 p.m. Wednesday, at the Thomas Funeral Home, P.A. in Cambridge, with the Rev. Francis Trascritti officiating. A visitation will be held one hour prior to the service. Burial will follow at Unity Washington Cemetery in Hurlock.
