Council leadership veterans advance to November

Wicomico County Council President Matt Holloway will join another former council president, John Cannon, on the November ballot.

The two men finished first and second in Tuesday’s Republican primary, with 40 and 39 percent of the vote respectively, while perennial candidate Muir Boda finished third with 20 percent.

Democrat Laura Mitchell is the only other at-large contender, therefore Holloway, Cannon and Mitchell will be vying for two spots.

In District 1 -- the majority-minority district of west Salisbury -- incumbent Sherrie Sample-Hughes is a candidate for retiring Delegate Rudy Cane’s seat.

In a three-way matchup Tuesday, Ernest Davis turned back fellow Democrats Marvin Ames and McKinley Albert Hayward, by taking 57 percent of the vote. Ames had 16 percent and Hayward received 27 percent.

Because no Republican has filed to run in that district, Davis will be alone on the November ballot.

In District 3, former council member and current school board member Larry Dodd stopped a primary challenge from Tom Taylor, receiving 63 percent of votes to Taylor’s 36 percent.
