Here is the latest update from Salisbury Mayor Jake Day and city department heads on current conditions in and around Salisbury:

• There are several areas of flooding around the city which are impassable to motor vehicle traffic:  Naylor Mill Rd. in front of the Toys ‘R Us; Northwood Drive near Alexander Avenue; Lake Street from Route 50 to Isabella Street; Fitzwater Street from the marina to Marine Road; Germania Circle.  All of the aforementioned areas are impassable, and should be avoided.  If you are planning to travel through any of these areas, please find an alternate route.
• Work continues on areas of road washout which were reported yesterday.  All repairs to these previously damaged sections are expected to be completed today.
• 13 Dwellings on Delaware Avenue were evacuated overnight. In all, 28 citizens in total were assisted from their homes by HCDD and the Salisbury Police and Fire departments.  Five people refused evacuation and remain in their homes at this time.
• As of this release, the voluntary evacuation of buildings in Canal Woods is lifted.  As the water recedes, evaluation will be made of the affected structures to determine if there has been any structural damage.  Mayor Day will meet with Canal Woods residents this afternoon.
• Public Works crews continue to monitor the integrity of dams around town, and are continuing to ensure that storm basins are clear of debris to ensure proper drainage.  At this time, all dams are in satisfactory condition.  The watch condition of the Morris Mill Dam on South Division Street has been downgraded from a two (2) to a one (1), indicating that the load on the dam is satisfactory.  Citizens who notice a clogged or obstructed storm drain are encouraged to notify Public Works at 410-548-3170, or via the Salisbury app on iPhone and Android.
• The Red Cross emergency shelter remains in place at Wicomico Presbyterian Church, at 129 Broad St. in Salisbury.  For more information, contact the Red Cross at 410-749-5331.
• The Salisbury Zoo has experienced significant flooding throughout, but is reporting no damage at this time.  An alpaca was able to get loose from its enclosure, but remained within the confines of the Zoo’s perimeter fence.  The animal became hypothermic, and was taken to the Zoo’s animal care facility and is recovering well.
• At 11:15 a.m. we are just past low tide.  High tide will occur at 4 p.m.  There is currently a 35 rain chance of rain during high tide.

The city continues to monitor conditions very closely.  Drivers are urged to exercise caution, and to slow down and allow extra room for braking.

Always avoid areas of standing water, rushing water, or areas where the road bed has been compromised in any way.  In the event of an emergency, please call 911.
