The intriguing story of women from different walks of life who come together in a beauty salon will be on stage when Community Players of Salisbury presents Steel Magnolias.

The play, at Guerrieri Hall at Wor-Wic Community College, opens Jan. 29.

“There is something for everybody. It’s a comedy so if you want to laugh you’ll be able to laugh. It’s a tear jerker so if you like that element you’re going to get that,” said director Rusty Mumford.

“There are going to be times when, if you need a good cry you’re going to get it. In the end, it’s uplifting. The women support each other. They become family in that beauty salon. They see each other through good and bad,” Mumford said.

The comedy, written by Robert Harling, is different from the movie because there are only six characters, all women, and the sole scene is inside the salon.

“You hear about the other characters and the other family members,” Mumford said.

Characters are Judy Hearn as Truvy, owner of the beauty shop in Chinquapin, La.; Mandy Moss as Annelle, the new stylist; Robin Mandelson as Clairee; Bobbie Calloway as Ouiser; Charmaine Cowell as M’Lynn; and Allison King as Shelby.

“I’ve enjoyed working with this group of ladies. From the very start they have become family, which makes it easy for them to do it on stage. There are a couple who are new to the Players’ stage, so we have a good mix of experience,” he said.

The Jan. 30 show at 2 p.m. is sold out.

Other performances will be on Friday, Jan. 29 at 8 p.m.; Saturday, Jan 30 at 8 p.m., Friday, Feb. 5 at 8 p.m.; and Saturday, Feb. 6 at 2 p.m.
