Community Players’ third production of the season, “Moon Over Buffalo,” promises to bring laughter to audiences as they watch the eight cast members bring it to life.

Opening April 22 in Guerrieri Hall at Wor-Wic Community College, the play is directed by Community Players’ veteran Sharon Benchoff, who last directed Les Misérables, with a cast of 75.

Dates and times for Moon Over Buffalo are April 22, April 23 and April 29 at 8 p.m. and April 23 and April 30 at 2 p.m. Tickets cost $14 each for adults and $12 each for students and senior citizens. Call 410-546-0099.

“The play is funny. It’s clever. I really like Ken Ludwig as a playwright. He uses a lot of witty dialogue, innuendo, turns of phrase. At the same time, it’s a broad comedy with probably a PG rating. It makes a nice afternoon or evening,” Benchoff said.

A graduate of the former Salisbury State College, where she studied theater – now Salisbury University -- Benchoff has been behind the scenes for decades, in writing, design, stage management, production and as an assistant director and director.

“We try to do the best job we can,” she said.

“Moon Over Buffalo” as focuses on George and Charlotte Hay, stars from 1950s whose careers are fading. They are in Private Lives and Cyrano de Bergerac in New York with five actors.

On the brink of breaking up because George had an affair, they get word they might just have one last chance at stardom because Frank Capra is coming to town to see their matinee. If he likes it, he might cast them in his movie remake of The Scarlet Pimpernel.

But everything could go wrong – and does – due to a visit from “their daughter’s clueless fiancé and hilarious uncertainty about which play they’re actually performing, caused by Charlotte’s deaf old stage-manager mother who hates every bone in George’s body.”

Cast members are: George Hay, portrayed by Pete Evans; Charlotte Hay, Stephanie Davis; Ethel, Robin Finley; Rosalind “Roz” Hay, Megan Davis; Richard, Matt Bogdan; Paul, Matt Hatfield; Eileen, Lilia Dobos; and Howard, Seth Brady.

The next, and final, production this season will be the classic Mary Poppins, opening June 17.

Community Players board members were scheduled to meet this week to decide on next season’s productions, Benchoff said.
