Maryland State Police continue to investigate the death of a man following a double-shooting in Salisbury the day after Christmas, bringing the city’s number of murders to two in 2016.

In 2015, there were four murders, but none within the city limits the preceding two years, according to police.

The shooting, on the night of Dec. 26, killed James Edward Joyce, 31, of Salisbury, and wounded a woman who was hospitalized, according to Maryland State Police.

Joyce was pronounced dead on the way to Peninsula Regional Medical Center, police said.

Injured was 56-year-old Hilda Barkley of Salisbury, who suffered at least one gunshot wound, police said.

Just after 9:30 p.m., Salisbury Police were flagged down in the 700 block of Baker Street by someone who told them two people had been shot inside an apartment on Baker Street, police said.

Salisbury Police called the Maryland State Police Homicide Unit to lead the investigation. Police said the shooting took place inside the apartment, but it isn’t clear if the victim was the intended target.

Police said according to preliminary information, one or more suspects were involved in the shooting. Investigators from the Homicide Unit and City Police are working to obtain more information, police said.

State Police investigators will be assisted by the Maryland State Police Forensic Sciences Division and City Police.
