SALISBURY - Charles Preston Smith Jr., 73, of Salisbury, died Saturday, April 16, 2016, at the Peninsula Regional Medical Center. Born in Salisbury, he was the son of the late Charles Preston Smith, Sr. and Lottie Mae Brewington Smith. A U.S. Army veteran who served with the 196th Light Infantry Brigade during the Vietnam Conflict, he received numerous medals and awards, including the Purple Heart. He was a lifelong farmer and also worked as a maintenance supervisor for Campbell Soup in Salisbury. He was a member of Mount Hermon United Methodist Church, a lifetime member of VFW, American Legion and affiliated with The Elks, Redmen's and Moose. He is survived by his wife, Bonnie Lynn White Smith; two children, Charles Preston Smith III and Christine Beth Smith, both of Salisbury; a sister, Joyce Burton of Salisbury; and other extended family members. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his first wife, Carol Jean Smith; and two sisters, Geraldine and Shirley Mitschke. A celebration of life was held Thursday, April 21, at Mount Hermon United Methodist Church in Salisbury. A private committal service will be held at a later date at Whatcoat UMC in Snow Hill. Arrangements are in the care of Holloway Funeral Home in Salisbury.
