BALTIMORE - Carlton Wendell Jones Sr., the son of Ruth and the late Herbert L. Jones, passed away on Tuesday, March 20, 2007, at the University Specialty Center in Baltimore, after a long illness. He was 56.

Carlton was born June 18, 1950 in Salisbury. He received his education in the Caroline County school system, graduating from Colonel Richardson High School in June of 1968.

After graduation, Mr. Jones worked at General Foods in Dover, Del. until he entered into the U.S.M.C. in 1969 and served in the Vietnam War from 1969- '70. Upon an honorable discharge in 1971, he married the former Bernet Jolley, and from this union, two sons were born, Carlton Wendell Jones Jr. and Eric Dante' Jones.

After serving his country from 1969-1971, Mr. Jones attended Chesapeake College, receiving an A.A. degree; then continuing his education at Salisbury State College with a B.A. degree in education.

Mr. Jones, being fond of people and youth, taught in Dorchester, Caroline and Wicomico counties as an industrial arts teacher. He was an excellent artist, and loved art with a passion.

While teaching, he also became a licensed barber at Wilson's Barber Shop in Easton for several years; continuing to own his own shop - Carlton's Cuts & Curls in both Cambridge and Hurlock.

Mr. Jones was an active member of Mt. Calvary United Methodist Church in Preston, where he served as a member of the United Methodist Men, Trustee Board, Unity Fellowship Choir, Usher Board, Building Committee and as a Lay Speaker and a Former Unity Fellowship President (for 25 years). He was very active in church affairs whenever he was called to do so until his health failed.

He is a past master of the Prospect Masonic Lodge 95 in Preston, and a former member of the Blake Blackston Post 71 American Legion in Easton. He was also an active 32nd-degree member of the King David Consissory 284 and the Abulaha Temple 206 A.E.A.O.N.M.S. in Salisbury.

Mr. Jones is survived by his wife of 36 years, Bernet; sons, Carlton Jr. of Laurel and Eric of Hurlock; mother, Ruth T.C. Jones; brother, Keith Jones; sisters, Vanessa (Robert) Duncan, Nettie (Cleveland) Gloster, Teresa Jones of Preston and Vernetta (Reginald) Conaway of Federalsburg; father-in-law and mother-in-law, Louis and Catherine Jolley of Hurlock; sisters-in-law, Gloria (Willie) Thompson of East New Market and Loistine Jolley of Cambridge; brothers-in-law, William (Marianna) Jolley of Los Angeles, Calif. and Louis (Lenora) Jolley Jr. of Hurlock; and several aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews and a number of other relatives and friends.

The viewing will be held tonight from 6-8 at the Mt. Calvary United Methodist Church in Preston. Funeral services will also be held at Mt. Calvary United Methodist Church in Preston at 1 p.m. on Saturday, with a final viewing occurring two hours prior to the funeral.

Arrangements are being handled by Benny Smith Funeral Home in Hurlock.
