CHURCH CREEK - Carl Richard Mills, 96, passed away at the Mallard Bay Care Center in Cambridge on Saturday, June 7, 2008.

He was born at Woolford and was one of 12 children born to the late John Randolph and Sarah Katherine Hall Mills.

Mr. Mills attended schools in Cambridge and started working at an early age farming with his father. He had been engaged in farming most of his life, and had also worked at the Dorchester County Roads Department for 20 years from 1957 until he retired in 1977.

Mr. Mills was first married to Margaret Elizabeth Brannock on Oct. 31, 1943. She passed away on April 9, 1963. He was later married to Magdalen Blann on July 12, 1963 who passed away on Jan. 28, 1997.

Mr. Mills attended the Cambridge Wesleyan Church. As a young man he enjoyed boxing and playing baseball. Mr. Mills was well known for his vegetable garden and also enjoyed going to auctions, fishing as well as playing golf.

He was a past president of the Cambridge Coin Club and enjoyed traveling with his son to a number of states and especially enjoyed visiting Yellowstone National Park.

Mr. Mills had been in failing health for the past year and had been at the Mallard Bay Care Center since February.

Survivors include two daughters, Gloria M. Pohl and her husband, Randy Pohl of Cambridge, Glenda C. Peters of North Miami Beach, Fla. and one son, C. Richard Mills and his wife, Bobbie Mills of Boca Raton, Fla.; two granddaughters, Teresa Pohl Hughes and her husband, Joseph Hughes of East New Market and Heather Peters McGlaughlin and her husband, Scott McGlaughlin of Cambridge; one grandson, David Peters and his wife, Keri Peters of Cambridge;

six great-grandchildren, Lauren McGlaughlin and Kelsey McGlaughlin, Trevor Hughes, Aaron McGlaughlin, Karlie Hughes, Lilly Peters and four stepgrandchildren.

In addition to his wives he was preceded in death by four sisters, Marguerite Mills, Naomi Todd, Martha Mills, Clara Mills, and seven brothers, Roy Mills, George Mills, Herbert Mills, Alvin Mills, Paul Mills, John Mills and Thomas Mills.

A funeral service will be held at 1 p.m. on Thursday at the Cambridge Wesleyan Church with Pastor Joe Harmon officiating. Burial will follow at Greenlawn Cemetery. The family will receive friends on Wednesday from 7 to 9 p.m. at the Thomas Funeral Home, P.A. in Cambridge. Pallbearers will be C. Richard Mills, Joseph Hughes, Scott McGlaughlin, David Peters, Paul Tyler and Thomas Mills.
