CAMBRIDGE - C. Rutledge Turner Sr., 92, passed away on Wednesday, Dec. 13, 2006, at Dorchester General Hospital.
He was born in Baltimore on Oct. 23, 1914, and was a son of the late Anthony Vernon and Anna Heil Turner.
Mr. Turner graduated from Cambridge High School in 1931. On March 11, 1939, he married Elizabeth Jones. After high school he worked at Phillips Packing Co. in the main office until 1941, and in 1947 he took over from his father, A. Vernon Turner and Sons Gas Co. until he retired in 1985.
He was very active with the local and regional Republican Party. Mr. Turner enjoyed hunting, boating, gardening, carving and painting.
He was a member of Zion United Methodist Church since 1944 where he attended Men"s Bible Class and various committees, B.P.O.E. Elks 1272 and a past member of Cambridge Lions Club.
He is survived by his wife of 67 years, Elizabeth Turner of Cambridge; a daughter, Donna James of Cambridge; a son, Charles Rutledge Turner Jr. of Cambridge; a grandson, Michael James of Cambridge; a brother, F. Ellwood Turner and wife, Judy of Cambridge; special nieces and nephews, Douglas Turner and wife, Cornea Turner and their family of Cambridge, Faye Turner Greene and her family of Cambridge, James Turner and wife, Dawn and their family of Secretary.
Besides his parents, he was preceded in death by a brother, N. Vernon Turner and nephew, Wayne Turner.
A memorial service will be held at 1 p.m. on Monday, at Zion United Methodist Church in Cambridge with the Rev. Kevin E. English officiating. A visitation will be held one hour prior to the service. Burial will be at the convenience of the family.
Honorary pallbearers will be the Zion United Methodist Church"s Men"s Bible Class.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions can be made to Zion United Methodist Church, 612 Locust St. Cambridge, MD 21613 or to the Heart Fund, 4217 Park Place Court, Glen Allen, VA 23060.
Arrangements are in the care of Thomas Funeral Home, P.A., in Cambridge.
