Boxing fans who cheer on Salisbury’s Alex Guerrero, as he fights Anthony Ferrante on Nov. 21, are likely to witness an exciting match.

“War. They can expect a war,” said Guerrero’s trainer, Hal  Chernoff  of Main Street Gym, who started working with the Dominican Republic native when Guerrero was a boy of 14.

“Ferrante is going to want a war and it’s going to take us going to war to beat him. I absolutely expect Alex to win,” Chernoff said about Guerrero, whose record is 11-0.

“He has never lost a fight and we’re not planning on losing this one. We have a good game plan. We have good training,” he said.

Guerrero and Ferrante will compete for the North American Boxing Association Cruiserweight title. Fighters in the cruiserweight classification are under 200 pounds.

“How do you prepare Alex to get ready for this kind of fight? You say, ‘Alex we gotta fight.’ Alex loves to fight. He’d go tomorrow,” Chernoff said.

Sponsored by Pohanka of Salisbury, Guerrero will face Ferrante at the event “Champs at the Chase” at the Chase Center on the Riverfront in Wilmington, Del. Six bouts are planned, including one between The New Ray Robinson, fighting Daniel Sostra.

The event begins at 7 p.m. Ticket prices range from $35 to $200.

“Ferrante is a very tough guy. He’s not as tall as Alex but he’s thick and he’s very strong. He’s knocked out some guys with one punch. He tends not to move a lot. He likes to come right at you and stand right in front of you. We look at it as a style to work against. We’ve fought big guys.in the ring. You can nullify a lot of things with a good technique and a good game plan. A lot of time the muscles don’t tell the show,” Chernoff said.

This fight will be a stepping stone for Guerrero.

“The only way you’re going to win a world title fight is to get your ranking high enough so you’re eligible … that’s what we’re working for. We have never worked for anything else. It is all about going to the top, never about fighting just to fight. I believe in my guys. I make them believe in themselves,” he said.

He described Guerrero as “a big guy, strong, who has tremendous heart.”

“When he gets up in the ring he’s there to fight. He’s not a guy that’s going to back off you. He’s got good skills. It takes more than just physical attributes to box.

“You have to be mentally focused. You have to be on point. The  way you think, your eating, your sleeping. It’s all-consuming.

“It’s the ultimate competition. There is no higher level of competition than two men in a fight that have respect for each other trying to best one another in combat,” Chernoff said.

Guerrero’s strongest asset, Chernoff said, is his heart, or tenacity.

“Alex is relentless. It doesn’t matter who you are. You’re going to have to deal with him. You are not going to have a guy in there you can just go and dominate,” he said.

He credited Ferrante for stopping “a lot of good fighters who were tough guys.”

“So, we’re not taking this fight lightly, but we certainly expect to win,” he said.
