CAMBRIDGE - Betty Mae E. Perry passed away on Friday, Sept. 7, 2007 at her home after a short illness.
She was born July 12, 1936, in Dorchester County, the daughter of the late Robert and Catherine Perry.
She was raised in Cambridge and received her education here, graduating from Mace"s Lane High School, class of 1954. After graduation, she moved to Philadelphia, Pa. She attended Temple University, later transferring and earning her B.A. degree in education from St. Joseph"s University, while working for the Free Library of Philadelphia.
Later she became ill and returned to Cambridge. She worked for a while at Western Publishing, then left there to work at Juvenile Services in Annapolis until she retired and then did substitute teaching for the board of education.
In her youth, Betty was a member of Mt. Olive Baptist Church. In her later years she became a member of Bethel AME Church and worked with the homecoming committee.
She is survived by two sisters, Patsy Collins (Frank) of Hurlock and Kathy Flamer (Purnell) of Cambridge; a brother, Wayman Manokey of New York; sister-in-law, Bernice Perry; nephew, Kenneth Young Jr.; nieces, Tia Collins, Latoya Franklin (James), Tiffany Washington; great-nieces, Shatera Outlaw, Khamfare Young, Chelsea Jones, Pashia and Nakia Washington and Jamiah Franklin; great-nephews, Jaquadre Young, Trevor Washington and Jamion Franklin and many, many cousins and friends.
She was preceded in death by her parents; brothers, William and Randall; nephew, Tyrrain; aunts, Lushia Perry, Goldie Pinder, Angeline Millard, Bertha Marshall, Beatrice Beaver; uncles, Harold Perry, Roland Pinder, Floyd Pinder, Richard Millard, Weldon Aldridge, William Thompson; a special cousin, Gennie Jones and William Marshall.
Services will be held 1 p.m. Saturday at Bethel AME Church in Cambridge with Elder Henry Carswell officiating. Friends may visit from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. preceding the services. Burial will follow in Bethel Cemetery.
Arrangments are being handled by the Bennie Smith Funeral Home.
