Bertha Jean Smith

TANGIER ISLAND, Va. - Bertha Jean Smith, 72, wife of the late Norman L. Smith, Jr. and a resident of Crisfield, Md., passed away Tuesday, April 26, 2011, at Coastal Hospice at the Lake in Salisbury, Md. Born on Nov. 25, 1938, on Tangier Island, Mrs. Smith was a daughter of the late Warner Ames Parks and Estha Lee Crockett Parks. She was a homemaker and a member of the Church of God in Crisfield. Survivors include a daughter, Karen Schweckendieck of Charleston, S.C.; two sons, Norman Lee Smith, III of Tangier and Shawn Smith of Pocomoke, Md.; two sisters, Winnie Higgins of Sykesville, Md., and Earlene Taylor of Tasley, Va.; three grandchildren, Ashley Moreland of Charleston, S.C., Zachary Smith and Luke Smith, both of Tangier; and many nieces and nephews. Other than her husband and parents, she was predeceased by a sister, Janice Charnock; and seven brothers, Johnnie, Lester, Mahlon, Francis, Warner, Harry S. and Bryan Parks. A memorial service will be conducted at the Church of God in Crisfield on Sunday, May 15, 2011, at 2 p.m. with Rev. Harvey Tyler officiating. Interment will be private. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to Coastal Hospice at the Lake, 351 Deers Head Hospital Road, Salisbury, MD 21801.
