Bernice Lyon, 106

DELMAR, Del. - Bernice Lyon, 106, passed away Monday, June 9, 2008 at the Delmar Nursing and Rehabilitation Center.

She was born April 16, 1902 in Galestown, daughter of the late Jacob Calloway and Anna Short Calloway.

Mrs. Lyon was a graduate of Towson Normal School and taught at Oak Grove School and also in Georgetown, Del. She later moved to Wilmington where she lived most of her adult life.

Mrs. Lyon worked as a personal assistant at Farnhurst State Hospital in Wilmington.

She had been a resident at Delmar Nursing and Rehabilitation Center for 14 years and when her health permitted was a greeter at the front door.

She is survived by one niece, Rita Ryle of Galestown; several great-nieces and great-nephews.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, William Lyon who died in 1985 and a brother, Holt Jacob Calloway.

A graveside service will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday at the Galestown Cemetery with the Rev. Dan Walker officiating.

In lieu of flowers or food, memorial donations may be made in memory of Mrs. Lyon to the Galestown Community House Fund, c/o Joy Baker, 5604 Galestown-Newhart Mill Road, Seaford, DE 19973.

The Zeller Funeral Home in East New Market is handling the arrangements.
