CAMBRIDGE - Arlie Page Baker, Jr., born in Lloyds, Md. on Dec. 7, 1919 and recently of Gaithersburg, Md., passed away peacefully in the presence of his family on Saturday, Sept. 14, 2013. Arlie and his two sisters, Virginia and Frances, were raised by a well known Chesapeake Bay waterman father, Arlie Page Baker, Sr. and his wife, Nettie Bromwell Baker, who ran a household of as many as 11 family and extended family members during the Depression. Arlie enjoyed scouting and was the second boy in Dorchester County ever to achieve the rank of Eagle Scout. Arlie earned a business degree at Beacom College where he lettered in varsity soccer and met Gary Taylor, a man who became his best friend for the next 73 years. Arlie's career with the Federal government began in 1940 in Panama and Alaska. Arlie served his country in World War II in the Army Air Force on Guam in the Pacific theater with the 314th Heavy Bombardment Wing. Upon the end of WWII, Arlie left the service as a combat veteran with four military medals and campaign awards. He used the GI bill and earned a degree in Business Administration from U of Md. and was promptly rehired by the Federal government where he pursued the rest of his 37 year career, earning a Master's degree while working full time. He continued working as a consultant for 12 years after his 1977 retirement from government service. Arlie and Lois loved to travel having visited Europe, Australia, New Zealand, Bermuda, the Caribbean and the Canadian Rockies. Arlie is survived by his loving wife of 67 years, Lois Bradley Baker; his sister, Frances Baker Pennington currently of Milford, Del.; as well as his two children, Alan Page Baker of Austin, Texas and Jean Baker Lyle of Gaithersburg, Md.; his three grandchildren, Dr. Julie Lyle Schuman of Atlanta, Ga., Dr. Kelly Diana Lyle Knappett of College Station, Texas, David Baker Lyle of Gaithersburg, Md.; and two great-grandsons, Ryan and Ethan Schuman both of Atlanta, Ga. A memorial service was held in the sanctuary of St. Paul's United Methodist Church on Friday Sept. 20, 2013. St Paul's, located at 10401 Armory Ave, Kensington, MD 20895.
