A state District Court hearing for Salisbury City Councilwoman April Jackson, scheduled for this past Monday, has been postponed until Oct. 18.

In mid-August, Jackson, who represents District 1 in Salisbury, was charged with second-degree assault, following a fight in a local park. Later, she told the Salisbury Independent she won’t resign and will let the court handle the matter.

City Council President Jack Heath said if voters decide they no longer want a City Council member to serve, he or she can only be removed after voters present a petition for recall.

Jackson was charged after the fight on Aug. 13 at the Billy Gene Jackson Park, named for her late father.

According to the police report filed by the Wicomico County Sheriff’s Office, the incident occurred after a woman at the park – reportedly Jackson -- asked 23-year-old Jarenea Janise Mitchell of Salisbury to leave, after seeing a fight with others.

When the woman asked her to go, she was hit in the face, according to the report.

Jackson’s name is not in the report, but the day and time of the incident coincide with information in court records, where Jackson’s name, charges and court date are posted.

Mitchell was charged with second-degree assault, disturbing the peace and affray, according to the sheriff’s office.

Jackson’s daughter, Raeshema Hitch-Whaley, 34, was charged with second-degree assault.
