Tropical Storm Moke carrying more rain toward hurricane-damaged Hawaii
SUMMARY: Tropical Storm Moke is passing to the south of Hawaii's Big Island on Sunday, close enough to dump a foot or more of rain on communities dealing with the aftermath of Hurricane Lala. The National Hurricane Center located the center of Moke about 310 miles south of Hilo Sunday morning. Its top sustained winds were around 45 mph, but the real impact is the rainfall in places where last weekend's hurricane downed trees, caused mudslides and washed out roads. Forecasters expected Moke to dump up to 10 inches, with as much as 15 inches in some places on the Big Island, enough to cause life-threatening flooding and mudslides.

Texas judge denies Karmelo Anthony's request for new trial in deadly stabbing at track meet
SUMMARY: A Texas judge has denied a new trial for Karmelo Anthony in the stabbing death of an athlete at a high school track meet. The case drew national attention and spurred harassment of the families and demonstrations at the courthouse. The 19-year-old Anthony is serving 35 years in prison after being convicted of murder in the April 2025 death of 17-year-old Austin Metcalf. Judge Michael Chitty denied the retrial motion in a half-page order following a two-day hearing this week near Dallas. He cited a review of the evidence but did not elaborate. Anthony's defense says there will be an appeal.

Officials warn wildland firefighters about the risks of using a supplement for smoke exposure
SUMMARY: Fire and medical officials have issued warnings about a supplement offered to Western wildland firefighters who have been exposed to toxic chemicals. Glutathione was given to some firefighters during California wildfires last year and again this month in Washington. Some firefighters have said it helped them feel better after breathing toxic smoke. The International Association of Fire Fighters, a first responders' labor union, has issued a safety advisory saying consumers should be cautious about glutathione's safety and claims that it can treat or prevent diseases. The advisory notes the supplement is not FDA approved. At least two pharmacies recalled glutathione in August due to bacterial contamination.

Buc-ee’s chain draws outcry in Ohio for launching fight over a mini mart's beaver logo
SUMMARY: Gas station giant Buc-ee’s has sparked a backlash in Ohio over one of its frequent trademark infringement lawsuits. Texas-based chain Buc-ee’s Ltd. says in its lawsuit that the logo for Beaver’s Mini Mart in the city of Beavercreek too closely resembles the gas station giant’s Buc-ee-brand beaver. The first Buc-ee’s location in Ohio opened about a half hour from the mini mart. Critics have attacked Buc-ee’s online and boycotted the stores. The mini mart's home city has passed a resolution making the beaver an official part of its history. Buc-ee’s has asked for a jury trial in federal court.

Federal judge vacates Trump policy that suspended processing of immigration visas from 75 countries
SUMMARY: A federal judge in New York vacated a Trump administration policy that had suspended the processing of visas from 75 countries, including Afghanistan, Iran, Russia and Somalia, whose nationals the Trump administration has deemed likely to require public assistance while living in the United States. U.S. District Judge Jeannette Vargas, who was appointed by former President Joe Biden, set aside the policy announced in January after concluding it was “contrary to law and in excess of statutory authority.” The State Department, led by Secretary of State Marco Rubio, said it had instructed consular officers to halt immigrant visa applications from the affected countries.

Pete Buttigieg returns to South Carolina as he weighs another White House run
SUMMARY: Pete Buttigieg was in South Carolina this weekend as he considers a second presidential campaign. South Carolina Democrats halted his 2020 run when he failed to connect with Black voters. Six years later, things have changed for both him and those same voters. He spent four years as President Joe Biden's transportation secretary. And for Black voters, a recent Supreme Court decision threatens Black representation specifically in the South. Buttigieg visited a Black church and spoke with students at a historically Black college. Some voters and Black leaders say they liked what they heard, while stressing it's still very early before 2028.

US and Canada fall deeper into a trade war with new tariffs as talks collapse and blame is spread
SUMMARY: The United States and Canada have fallen deeper into a trade war. New tariffs are expected to raise prices for products in both countries. Each side is blaming the other for the collapse of negotiations in Washington late Friday. That's led the U.S. to impose 50% tariffs on $20 billion worth of Canadian goods and Canada setting Sept. 8 as the start of its retaliatory penalties. President Donald Trump’s import taxes will hit about 5% of what Canada ships to the United States every year, ranging from hockey sticks to tongue depressors. Prime Minister Carney said Ottawa would respond with targeted tariff protection for industries exposed to the new U.S. duties. No new talks are planned.

Kazakhstan votes in a parliamentary election expected to strengthen president’s grip on power
SUMMARY: Kazakhstan voted Sunday in a parliamentary election that is expected to further strengthen President Kassym-Jomart Tokayev’s grip on power in Central Asia’s largest nation. The pro-presidential Adilet party is predicted to win a majority in Sunday's election with other loyal parties also likely to enter parliament. Tokayev has been in office since 2019. He initiated a constitutional overhaul in March to merge two parliamentary chambers into one and expand presidential authority. The election comes amid economic challenges with inflation at 10.2% and recent tax hikes. Media crackdowns have intensified with criminal cases against independent journalists. Critics say the elections are heavily skewed in favor of Tokayev's party.

Indonesian police arrest 72 people suspected of starting forest fires
SUMMARY: Indonesian authorities have arrested 72 people suspected of starting forest and peatland fires. The fires have caused a choking haze cloud in central and west Indonesia. Indonesia’s National Disaster Management Agency says the fires are driven by an intensifying El Nino pattern and a prolonged dry season. The blazes have spread smoke into Malaysia, straining relations with neighboring countries. On Sunday, parts of Borneo and South Sumatra were heavily affected. The agency resumed cloud-seeding operations, deploying helicopters for water-bombing missions. Authorities are investigating whether companies financed the land clearing, which could expand the probe beyond those arrested.

Carney warned about economic coercion. Now Trump is testing the Canadian prime minister
SUMMARY: Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney drew international attention earlier this year by warning that middle powers such as Canada must resist economic coercion. Now President Donald Trump is putting that to the test in a deepening trade war. The United States has imposed 50% duties on about $20 billion worth of Canadian goods. Carney said Canada's dollar-for-dollar retaliation will begin Sept. 8. Carney’s strategy is to accept economic pain rather than yield to pressure from a larger power. Whether Canada can withstand the cost could shape how Carney is viewed at home and abroad. And it could influence how other U.S. allies respond to Trump.

Powerful storm hits Baltic countries, killing 2 and leaving hundreds of thousands without power
SUMMARY: A powerful cyclone has hit Latvia and Lithuania, leaving two people dead and more than half a million without electricity. The storm, which struck from Saturday into Sunday, brought rain and strong winds. Israel's deadly Gaza strikes cast doubt on ceasefire progress days after Kushner visit

Local hospitals and the Palestinian Red Crescent say at least 10 people were killed in two strikes, days after a U.S. envoy met with Israel's prime minister. Witnesses said Israeli troops also crossed the ceasefire line and detained a Hamas police colonel. Israel’s military said the strikes targeted Hamas commanders involved in previous attacks. A trade war between Canada and the US further ruptures a once-close and durable alliance
SUMMARY: Canada and the United States have long had one of the world's closest and most durable alliances. But that alliance is being severely tested now by one of the deepest crises in decades.
